The Charter is an ongoing effort of German civil society groups and individuals to formulate a different kind of vision for the knowledge society. This vision is based on civil rights and the principle of sustainability.
The succeeding versions of the Charter were drafted by the “Initiative Sustainable Knowledge Societies” at the instigation of the Heinrich-Boell-Foundation, Germany (http://www.boell.de/) . The Charter is work in progress.
So far, three versions of the Charter have been produced:
- Version 1.0 was submitted as an official contribution of the Heinrich Böll Foundation to PrepCom2 in February 2002.
- Version 2.0 included the outcomes of an open workshop in Berlin in March 2003 and was finalised in May 2003.
- Version 3.0 incorporated the discussions held online at http://www.chartaforum.de/ in May and June 2003 and was finalized in June 2003. It was distributed at the Intersessional Meeting of the WSIS in Paris in July 2003.
